The residence
Some houses are renovated. This one was restored — quarter-sawn oak floors, custom-milled fir, original leaded glass and a Jøtul insert set in its first tile, all kept intact while the mechanical, insulation and structure underneath were quietly brought up to 2026. Set beneath a canopy of mature elms on a 50′ x 128′ lot, four blocks from the Glencoe Club and a short walk to the river.
Built in 1918 and restored rather than replaced, this character bungalow sits beneath a canopy of mature elms on a beautifully landscaped 50′ x 128′ lot in the heart of Elbow Park. A covered front veranda opens into rich original woodwork, quarter-sawn oak hardwood, custom-milled fir floors and preserved heritage detail — a house that still reads like 1918 while running like a new one.
The living room is anchored by a Jøtul fireplace insert and oversized windows; the dining room seats a crowd. The custom kitchen is the showpiece — handcrafted cabinetry, a farmhouse sink, twin skylights, Sub-Zero refrigeration, a 36″ DCS gas range, a Miele dishwasher and workspace along its full length, with a glassed-in breakfast nook opening onto the deck. Two bedrooms and an updated four-piece bath complete single-level living on the main floor.
The fully developed lower level is not an afterthought: full ceiling height, hydronic in-floor heat, engineered hardwood, a large recreation and games area with custom built-ins and a hidden Murphy bed, a third bedroom, and a five-piece bath with a freestanding tub and slate walk-in shower. Extra insulation and sound attenuation make it genuinely liveable rather than merely finished.
Outside, the private back yard is the argument for the whole house. Mature trees, professionally landscaped gardens, an expansive lawn and a multi-level cedar deck, with a covered pavilion built around a 36″ Wolf natural-gas barbecue. The detached double garage has been upgraded with insulation, electrical service, a concrete floor and an automatic opener.
Behind the character: a structural steel beam, hydronic in-floor heating in the basement, upgraded mechanical systems and blown-in wall insulation. Steps from the Glencoe Club, Elbow Park School, the river pathways, tennis courts, and the shops and restaurants of Britannia and 4th Street — the combination of authentic heritage craftsmanship, thorough modernization and this address rarely comes up at once.

Worth knowing
After the City annexed the land in 1907, developer Freddy Lowes surveyed it as an exclusive residential district of spacious lots on the banks of the Elbow. Building began in earnest in 1910.
The Elbow Park Residents Association dates to 1930 — no other Calgary community association is older, and it still runs the rinks, courts and events.
Construction was cut short by the First World War, which is why blocks of 1910s character homes sit beside later infill rather than a single uniform style.
Calgary's premier private athletic and social club sits on 29 Avenue, a few blocks north — close enough that members here walk to it.
Sandy Beach, River Park and Stanley Park all border the community, connecting to the Elbow pathway network and dozens of kilometres of riverside trail.
Calgary holds one of the largest disease-free stands of American elm left in the world, and these streets are among the best of it — the shade over Elbow Drive is not an accident.
The residents association keeps tennis courts, soccer fields, a hockey rink, a pleasure-skating rink, ball diamonds and basketball courts running year-round.
Its permanent installations were developed in consultation with Indigenous Elders, ecologists and river engineers — most Calgarians walk past them without knowing.
Elbow Park School serves K–6 in the community itself, with Rideau Park, Earl Grey and Western Canada High — and its IB program — all close by.
Around 3,285 people live here, 94% of them owners and 98% in single-detached homes. Turnover is low enough that buyers often wait years for the right street.

Calgary's first planned suburb, laid out in 1910 on the banks of the Elbow River and shaded ever since by one of the finest elm canopies in the country. Ten minutes from downtown, and quiet enough that the loudest thing on the street is usually the wind in those trees.
Elbow Park School sits inside the community, the Glencoe Club is four blocks north, and Sandy Beach, River Park and Stanley Park all border it — with the shops and restaurants of Britannia Plaza and 4th Street a short walk or shorter drive away.
